“I am more struck with it on the second reading”

Sen. Henry Cabot Lodge to State Sen. Calvin Coolidge: January 10, 1914.

In this letter, Senator Lodge praises the principles outlined in Coolidge’s “Have Faith in Massachusetts” speech. He applauds the originality with which Coolidge states unchanging truths and applauds his cautious approach to legislation. Coolidge and Lodge, however, would not always be the closest of political allies. Upon the death of Warren Harding, Lodge would exclaim: “My God! That means Coolidge is president!”
