“Northampton must take no backward step”

Mayor Calvin Coolidge’s inaugural address: January 3, 1910.

In this speech, Coolidge shows his civic pride for Northampton, his attention to detail, and his appreciation for economy. He expresses broad satisfaction with most of Northampton’s municipal affairs, crediting the city and its people for its good government. He also outlines two principles of government that he would maintain throughout his career. First, that it must be determined whether an issue is of urgent public necessity or convenience before planning to solve it, and, second, that any new solution must be funded without waste or debt.
