“We are prone now to discuss personalities not measures”

Calvin Coolidge Speech Introducing Robert Luce: October 27, 1906.

This is the earliest record in the Vermont Historical Society’s collection of a political speech by Coolidge. He speaks in favor of Robert Luce, a Massachusetts state representative who advocated easier access to voting registration. We see in this letter Coolidge’s focus on sound policy, rather than the personalities of politicians. Coolidge also expresses a confidence in the civic worthiness of all citizens, irrespective of their station in life.
