“Guess who?”

A letter from Calvin Coolidge to Grace Goodhue: October 8, 1904.

This letter demonstrates how smitten Calvin is with Grace—and a bit of his humor too. In the letter, Coolidge writes, “How is it you seem like a new girl each time I see you?” And for the return address, he wrote, “Guess who? / Don’t return in 5 days / He’ll return sooner than that.” Although obviously in love, he still refers to her as “My dear Miss Goodhue” and signs the letter “Calvin Coolidge.” It would not be until December when he started addressing letters to “Grace” and signing them “Calvin.”
