“I shall be the next President of the Senate”

Calvin Coolidge writing to his father: November 12, 1913.

In his Autobiography, Coolidge writes, “It had been my intention to retire at the end of my second term [in the Senate], but the President of the Senate was reported as being a candidate for Lieutenant-Governor, and as it seemed that I could succeed him I announced that I wished for another election.” As Coolidge notes in the letter, he poured himself into his work. Through such work, he was able to secure the necessary votes from his fellow senators before others even threw their hats in the ring.
