“I offer no apology for the place of my birth”

Speech by Calvin Coolidge as a candidate for mayor of Northampton: December 3, 1909.

In this campaign speech, Coolidge cites his deep New England roots and strong ideals as qualifying him to be Northampton’s next mayor. Instead of apologizing for being born outside Massachusetts, Coolidge doubles down on his Vermont pride. He also makes no excuse for campaigning tenaciously and says that preserving his honor in the course of the campaign matters more to him than victory.
