“You must always try to be a good Church member”

Calvin Coolidge writing his son, Calvin. Jr., on the occasion of the latter’s 12th birthday: April 12, 1920.

The tone of this letter is much more jovial and light than that of the letter Coolidge sent John on this 13th birthday in 1919. Coolidge says that Calvin, Jr. is a “good boy and a great comfort to mamma and me,” and that he sends the boy “very much love.”

Coolidge comments on the boy joining “the Church,” meaning Edwards Congregational Church in Northampton. The Coolidges attended services there, and it would be the setting for Calvin, Jr.’s funeral in 1924, Coolidge’s in 1933, and Grace’s in 1957.
