“Please put Vermont on in full”

Grandma Coolidge to Calvin: April 29, 1891.

In the spring of 1891, Coolidge went to St. Johnsbury academy in St. Johnsbury Vermont for a post high school course of study. This letter, apparently written on multiple dates, begins with an admonition; Calvin had apparently not been addressing his letters in enough detail, and so his latest one had been sent to New Hampshire. More than thirty years later, Calvin would admonish his own son, John, for making this same mistake. Grandma Coolidge then updates him on the town, including the good sermon of a young visiting preacher and death of a baby. Grandmother concludes with a thinly veiled offer from Col. Coolidge to send Calvin more money but adds that Calvin has to ask first.
