“He is very low but there is still hope”

Telegram from Calvin Coolidge to ,presumably, William W. Stickney: July 6, 1924.

Coolidge updates Stickney on the results of Calvin, Jr.’s operation. The Washington Post reported on July 6 with a headline “President’s Son Operated On in Walter Reed; Work of Surgeons Successful.” The Post quoted one of the physicians, “We accomplished all that we expected” and went on cautioning that “the boy’s condition was considered still “very serious.” He was described as making a “brave fight against the disease.”

Both Grace and Calvin stayed at Walter Reed the night of July 5/6. The Post reported that “they had a room near the sick chamber, where they could keep in constant touch with their son.”
