“Little weaker but resisting”

Draft telegram from Calvin Coolidge on the condition of Calvin, Jr.: undated.

Possibly, this telegram is intended for William W. Stickney and may have been sent the evening of July 6. The Washington Post reported on July 7 that an “announcement was made at 1 o’clock this morning that there had been a very slight change for the better in the condition of Calvin Coolidge, Jr.”

On July 8, however, the Washington Post reported: “Calvin Coolidge, Jr., son of the President, died of blood poisoning at 10:30 o’clock last night in Walter Reed hospital… President and Mrs. Coolidge, who had remained almost constantly at the hospital, were at his bedside, hopeful, and cheering and comforting their son for hours before he lapsed into a coma that preceded death… The President and Mrs. Coolidge bore up bravely. Soon after the death they went to the White House, where the older brother, John, was awaiting them.”
