“A dog is no joke”

Calvin Coolidge writing his father about the upcoming Republican State Convention: September 10, 1920.

According to the Boston Post, the Coolidges received a Belgian police dog from Arthur Wellman of Topsfield on the occasion of Calvin and Grace’s 15th wedding anniversary. The article, dated October 5, lists the name of the dog as “Judy the First,” so the Coolidges may have changed the name. Calvin, Jr. and John offered the dog to their grandfather but “will be glad [he does] not want their dog.” Coolidge goes on to mention Flora Brown, who is his stepmother’s sister. She lived in Proctor and then Springfield, Vermont.

The Republican State Convention that Coolidge mentions was held in the Tremont Temple in Boston on September 18. The convention will, among other things, select electors for the upcoming presidential election.
