“Like a benediction”

Calvin Coolidge writing to his father after the birth of his first son, John: September 11, 1906.

The September 7 birth occurred in Calvin’s house, a rental on Massasoit St. in Northampton, about 2 weeks after the Coolidges moved in. In his Autobiography Coolidge writes of the birth, “The fragrance of the clematis which covered the bay window filled the room like a benediction, where the mother lay with her baby. We called him John in honor of my father. It was all very wonderful to us.”
