“His other grandparents were not so thoughtful”

Calvin Coolidge writing to his father: September 4, 1908.

The letter is written on stationery from the Massachusetts House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary. In his Autobiography, Coolidge writes that, in first term as representative, he served on the Constitutional Amendments and Mercantile Affairs committees. In his second term, Coolidge requested the Committee on the Judiciary, as he felt it would “assist me in my profession.”

In this letter, Coolidge comments on the birthday present sent by his father for 2 year old John, a check. He also commented on how John’s other grandparents, Grace’s parents, were “not so thoughtful.” This may be alluding to a strained relationship between Coolidge and his in-laws.

Coolidge ends by telling his father about how his law practice “keeps me busy most of the time.” Coolidge was getting so busy with work in Northampton, and with a growing family, that he did not run for reelection to the General Court in November of 1908.
